The HCC youth exchange program offers a 10 day basketball exchange program for high school students between Heidelberg, Germany and San Francisco, California.

Between 2010 and 2014, three groups of high school students from Castlemont High School in Oakland, CA, and Booker T. Washington Community Center and Donaldina Cameron House in San Francisco, CA stayed ten days each in Heidelberg, Germany.

During their stay in Heidelberg the San Francisco youths stayed with individual families and got together with German youth groups for excursions to the area around Heidelberg and Mannheim and met for basketball tournaments and other recreational activities.

In 2012 and 2014, two groups of youth from Heidelberg visited San Francisco. The German youth were introduced to American baseball (San Francisco Giants); visited museums and attended cultural events; were taken on boat excursions on the San Francisco Bay, and met for baseball scrimmages at Cameron House and Booker T. Washington Community Center in San Francisco, and Castlemont High School in Oakland.

The year 2014 exchange was the last one organized and funded by individuals. Future expansion will depend on a reliable institutional structure for the youth exchange as well as sustainable funding mechanisms.
